Free Movement

Since 1967, Israel has implemented policies of movement restrictions, including checkpoints, roadblocks, the Apartheid Wall, and issuing travel permits, which are almost impossible to receive. Not only are these permits hard to get, but they also cost upwards of 700 dollars per month. These checkpoints have ruined the Palestinian economy, as it’s not only on land, but water. Palestinians often can’t go to work, school, to different cities, or even the hospital. The restrictions on movement have severely affected the Palestinians access to medical care. Ambulances and other emergency medical are not exempt from the checkpoints. Palestinian ambulances are stopped at checkpoints, sometimes for hours. Many people have died because of these delays. There are cases of women giving birth at these checkpoints. The Apartheid Wall, the hundreds of checkpoints and closures and the blockade on Gaza has made access to a quality education nearly impossible. 78 percent of school children have been absent because checkpoints closed or they were not allowed through, according to “Fragmented Foundations: Education and Chronic Crisis in the Occupied Palestinian Territories,” by Susan Nicolai.
