This counter-cartographic map highlights
the shifting nature of the ever-evolving
city that is New York through an emphasis on
past neighborhoods that have been driven to extinction
post World War II, juxtaposed alongside new ones that
have emerged in recent years. The central mission of this work
is to shed a geographical light on the way in which industrial,
socioeconomic and political forces play a part in shaping the
ethos of a community, space, and physical area.
The sun-rising ideographs (symbolizing a new phase) encompass new developments, whereas the archival
parchment paper icons symbolize neighborhoods of the past.
