Places to Disappear in Manhattan

Texts Which Inspired and Informed my Project

First, JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. While I used to live outside New York City, when I was reading this book during junior year of high school in California, it was hard for me to picture how the locations which narrator Holden Caulfield described fit together. A companion book by Peter Beidler - A Reader's Companion to The Catcher in the Rye - had an illustrated map of locations called "Holden's Manhattan." Holden is a teenager searching for a place where he feels at home and can be free from the worries brought on by being expelled from his prep school just before Thanksgiving.

Second, more recently, I saw The Devil Wears Prada 2. Unlike my viewing of the first installment, since I now live in Manhattan, I recognized many of the sites and settings in main character Andi's New York from my day-to-day experience, from the Chrysler Building to Central Park. I felt good to see the movie as a New York resident and realize that the same New York landmarks can be the backdrop to many different stories.

As I thought about what my own personal journey and map of New York might look like, I thought of my constant quest for places where I can get peace and solitude to reflect, relax (and sometimes study) - when the big city and crowded dorm life gets too overwhelming. I designed the itinerary of my map to help users go from busier public locations to take a break to quieter, more hidden spaces, ending in one that seems like it is not in New York City at all.
