A natural lifespan of a chicken is between ten to twenty years. In one case, 15,000 "spent" egg-laying hens were tossed alive into a wood chipping machine, a common industry practice. Almost all egg laying hens will die prematurely or be slaughtered for their meat. The egg industry is the poultry industry.
