You Open The Door.

(Scroll Down)

Your sibling stands on the other side of your front door, tears streaming down their face. You feel a wave of sadness and empathy rush over you before it suddenly disappears, replaced by an overwhelming happiness to see your sibling. You don't understand why they're crying. Your sibling stays staring at the ground and begins to speak softly

"The funeral home can't take her for a few more days, and I can't get a hold of Dad. I don't know how to do this on my own."

Your sibling collapses onto your shoulder and quietly sobs, throwing their arms around you as they do. You feel increasingly confused as the situation continues, but any negative or sad emotion is instantly replaced with a sense of excitement or happiness.

"I'm so so happy you came by" You say to your sibling, hugging them back tightly.

Your sibling slowly pulls away from you and looks into your eyes as they wipe their tears. They seem equally confused as they see your fixed expression of glee.

"What do you mean? Why aren't you sad?"

"What's the point in being sad?" you respond instinctually

Your sibling stares back into your eyes longer and harder, baffled at what you are saying. They appear hurt, confused, and angry, but you just feel happy to see them and do not understand why they aren't feeling just as happy.

"Cut it out. This isn't fair, it's not funny."

You feel incredibly overwhelmed with confusion as you try to process what is happening, standing completely still as you try to process it all. Your mind continues to fight against your better wishes of understanding the situation, pumping your brain full of Seratonin each time a negative synapse fires. You begin to realize the downsides of your initial wish, feeling panicked and scared for only a second before those feelings are replaced too. This back and forth begins to cause a cluster headache until you suddenly burst out into a fit of unstoppable, irrational, and nonsensical laughter in your siblings face. You make every attempt to control yourself and explain what's going on, but your sibling stares back at you with an expression of shock and sadness as you gasp for air. As tears begin to fill their eyes they step towards you

"FUCK YOU! THIS WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE MY JOB, I'M TRYING MY BEST!"

You continue to laugh harder and harder, desperatley trying to get out a word in-between breaths to explain to your sibling. The best you can manage is:

"I CAN'T HELP IT!"

Your sibling's tears stream down their face as it turns bright red with anger. They turn and run out the door sobbing, leaving you alone laughing at your front door.

You continue laughing until you can't anymore. As you settle down and catch your breath, you stay still a while. In a moment of quiet, you feel absolutely nothing. As if on cue, your phone begins to vibrate again, demanding your attention. Without thinking, you open your phone and scroll through the millions of notifications flooding your feeds. After a second, you forget why you were ever confused or sad in the first place, brushing it off as your sibling being weird. You spend the next few hours blissfully scrolling through your emails.

Your new future is decided, and your fate sealed.
